On July 20th, Global-Give-a-Book hosted the Lavender Libros Literacy Program at the Lavender in the Village Festival to promote youth literacy. During the event, GGAB gave away over seven hundred free books to New Mexican families. Among the titles distributed were the popular Eric Loves Animals (Just Like You!), Catching Flight, A Tiger Like Me, and The Tiny Star. It was truly rewarding to be part of an event that brought so much joy to children, their parents, and their grandparents.

As a UNM reading tutor, my responsibilities included educating visitors about GGAB's mission to advance youth literacy, distributing stickers to children, and reading aloud to families and kids. Reading aloud to the children and their families was the highlight of my day. It was inspiring to see the kids captivated by the story. I read Cat Says, Dog Says, a charming book that explores the whimsical, finicky nature of cats and the playful character of dogs through clever rhymes. I also enjoyed watching the children munch on their GGAB popcorn and interact with Daisy Shepherd while listening to the stories.

The most magical read-alouds were definitely those conducted by Miss New Mexico, Karyn Dodier. Even I was drawn away from my tasks to listen to her read. It was incredibly special for the kids and their families to have a prominent community member championing youth literacy.

At the end of the day, the GGAB team had successfully given away all of the books. We had hundreds of new subscribers to the GGAB newsletter and received many donations, thanks to the generosity of so many New Mexicans! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a meaningful event and to witness firsthand the positive impact we made on our community.
