Global Give-A-Book is dedicated to promoting youth literacy through engaging read-a-thons. These events provide essential resources and books to children, fostering a love for reading. Support from partners like PNM and Sandia Laboratories is crucial in sustaining ongoing literary initiatives.
Where Stories Come Alive: Barelas Community Center Read-A-Thon

On October 4th I was able to attend a Read-A-Thon put on by GGAB at the Barelas Community Center. I love attending Read-A-Thons, they are always a good time. This one was especially cool because the mayor's wife, Elizabeth Keller, attended as a guest reader! She personally greeted each child individually before the event began and she read A Tiger Like Me aloud to everyone. The kids loved engaging with her, many of them told her about how awesome their school librarians are! Which was amazing to hear, they are all very deserving of the praise.
Each child listened intently to the story as she read it, turning each page alongside her. After the story was finished the kids completed a book report with the help of some awesome volunteers from the community and Sandia Labs. It was cool to hear a little about their jobs at Sandia Labs and what they do. The kids asked lots of questions and I think everyone learned a lot.
Once the book reports were done everybody had a snack and packed up their things. Each kid went home with two brand new books they can read as often as they like, including A Tiger Like Me. There is only one more Read-A-Thon left this year, but I am excited to do it again!
