Fall 2024

Global Give-A-Book is dedicated to promoting youth literacy through engaging read-a-thons. These events provide essential resources and books to children, fostering a love for reading. Support from partners like PNM and Sandia Laboratories is crucial in sustaining ongoing literary initiatives.

History Major

On October 3rd I had the pleasure of attending the Taylor Ranch Community Center Read-A-Thon as a UNM Reading Tutor. GGAB hosts these events as part of its ongoing mission to support youth literacy. Each child in attendance receives two new packaged books to take home with them at each Read-A-Thon.

This event in particular was made especially fun for the kids by a guest reader, City Councilor Louie Sanchez. He read Pipsie Nature Detective and taught the kids a little about his job. He told them about when he was a police officer and how he went from that job to his current one.

The kids were excited and engaged asking lots of questions. The kids even asked him to sign their copies of Pipsie Nature Detective when he was done reading!  Everyone had a snack and a juice box while we talked about the book and they asked many more questions.

The children also completed a short book report with the help of some awesome GGAB volunteers. It was so much fun for everyone involved. After the book had been read, the report was over, and the snacks were eaten everyone packed up their things with a smile on their faces and took their new books home to read again.

Working amongst students during one of our October Read-A-Thon was extremely

inspiring, as GGAB featured a very special guest speaker, Louie Sanchez, a former member of the Albuquerque Police Department, and currently a District 1 Councilor. Eli, Sofia, and myself, introduced ourselves as the UNM reading tutors working with GGAB, along with the organization's mission, values, and story to the students. Within this, we also elaborated on the various other programs that GGAB is involved in within the community, specifically asking the students if they have any pets at home, and mentioning our program; Reading with Shepard Daisy, where GGAB books are read to Daisy the German Shepherd. Questions like these encourage students to be more engaged and curious about what GGAB does, as they are able to relate it to their own lives, as many students had pets at home.

Moving forward, Louie Sanchez read a Pipsie Nature Detective book to the students, making sure to keep them engaged and entertained, as he made the story fun by adding commentary, asking questions, and expanding on certain aspects of the text.

Afterward, we made sure all students had a book report, and our GGAB UNM reading tutors and volunteers helped all the students complete the report to the best of their ability. Overall, this Read-A-Thon had a tremendous impact on promoting youth literacy, as it gave them an inspirational guest reader to learn about, while also practicing their reading, spelling, writing, and comprehension skills. Louie did an excellent job reading to the students, and we hope to have other inspirational guest speakers in future Read-A-Thons.

We extend our deepest gratitude to PNM and their commitment to creating brighter futures and fueling a stronger New Mexico through literacy. Thank you, PNM!
