Public Education Department (PED) Summer Reading Program Read-a-Thon
This summer, the State of New Mexico launched an impressive literacy program aimed at serving 10,000 children across the state. On July 25th, Global-Give-a-Book hosted a Read-a-Thon at one of the Public Education Department’s Summer Reading Programs located at Santa Fe Community College.
With the support of our generous sponsors, Del Norte Credit Union and Washington Federal Foundation, GGAB was able to provide snacks and distribute 100 books to children in need. In addition to funding the books, Del Norte Credit Union also donated book bags for the children.
The titles given away included the classic Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss and Catching Flight by Rebekah Lowell. It was heartwarming to see the kids so excited about receiving a book, with the sounds of unwrapping making it feel like Christmas.
My favorite part of the Read-a-Thon was reading Oh, The Places You’ll Go to the children. It is one of my favorite childhood books and I love the clever rhyming and rhythm it has. It was wonderful to see all the kids gathering on the classroom rugs to listen. I then read Catching Flight, a breathtaking book about the wonders of nature and the beauty of birds. Afterward, GGAB handed out book report forms for the kids to fill out, asking for the book's title, author, illustrator, and their favorite part.
Without the help of the sponsors, Del Norte Credit Union and Washington Federal Foundation, GGAB wouldn’t have been able to give out free books. Working alongside the Public Education Department’s Summer Reading Program, which graciously hosted the Read-a-Thon, their assistance allows Global-Give-a-Book to help close the literacy gap among children.
