Cecelia Trujillo, Biology Major, UNM Reading Tutor
Cecelia Trujillo, Biology Major, UNM Reading Tutor

Hello, my name is Cecelia Trujillo! I’m a sophomore at the University of New Mexico. I’m currently majoring in biology, and I’ve always been passionate about education and community involvement.

I became a GGAB reading tutor because I hold the belief that every child deserves access to books and the opportunity to develop strong literacy skills. Growing up in New Mexico, I’ve seen firsthand how literacy can impact a child’s future, and I wanted to be part of a program that makes a real difference. Through GGAB, I get to help young readers build confidence, discover new stories, and develop a lifelong love for learning. I’m excited to share my experiences and insights along the way!

Outside of school, I’m involved in the UNM Mountaineering club, which focuses on outdoor adventures and community engagement. Through this club, I’ve had the chance to connect with others who share a love for the outdoors while also giving back through various service projects. In addition to Mountaineering, I’m a member of Slice of Bio, an academic club for biology majors that helps students navigate challenges in STEM, plus, there’s free pizza! Both of these clubs have helped me develop teamwork, leadership, and communication skills that I’ll apply as a tutor, all while reinforcing the importance of giving back to the community.

Eventually, my goal is to conduct research in the medical and education fields. Being part of GGAB will help me build a strong foundation in technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills while also shaping me into a community-oriented researcher. Just as GGAB explores the 'why' behind youth literacy, I want to tackle complex questions in my field of study. Additionally, this experience will give me valuable insight into education, helping me better understand how learning and accessibility impact different communities.

My experience with GGAB strengthens my communication, problem-solving, and mentorship skills essential for both research and science communication in my field. As a biology major, learning how to teach complex ideas in an accessible way directly prepares me for a career in medical and education research. GGAB has shown me the power of community-driven impact, a value I will carry into my future work.
