GGAB Ambassador Expands Literacy Efforts from New Mexico to Texas!
Houston-based GGAB Ambassador Mercedes is making a lasting impact on youth literacy through book distributions, community outreach, and advocacy efforts across multiple states.
During the Summer of 2022, Mercedes played a key role in the Colors of The World Crayola Crayon Campaign, partnering with Walmart, A World of Difference, and GGAB to distribute books and crayons to children in Albuquerque and Northern New Mexico Pueblos. She also joined GGAB Ambassador Natalie Rose in reading to first graders at an elementary school in Española, NM, ensuring each student received a new book and Crayola crayons.
In September 2022, she expanded her literacy efforts to Cypress, Texas, providing Spanish-language GGAB books to Señora Cooper’s Prep Spanish class students, furthering access to diverse reading materials.
By March 2023, Mercedes took her advocacy to the New Mexico State Capitol, joining GGAB Founder/CEO Sylvia Maser to promote youth literacy initiatives. She had the opportunity to witness the legislative process firsthand, as Cynthia Borrego and other House Representatives acknowledged the importance of investing in childhood literacy.
Since 2021, GGAB Ambassador Mercedes has played a key role in distributing books through GGAB’s ongoing community projects, which bring literacy resources to underserved communities. She has helped provide books to children and families through partnerships with Animal Humane New Mexico, St. Felix Food Pantry, and the APS McKinney-Vento Homeless Program, ensuring access to reading materials where they are needed most. Mercedes has also volunteered alongside Chick-fil-A at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, furthering GGAB’s mission to make books accessible to all.
